Digital Trophies: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future in Sports
With the growing global awareness of the environmental impact of human activity, industries are searching for sustainable solutions, and the sports industry is no different.
One key area where the sports industry can make a meaningful impact is in the production of medals and trophies for competitions.
The production of physical medals and trophies involves using various materials such as metals, plastics, and wood, as well as transportation, which contributes to carbon emissions and environmental degradation. With that in mind, digital trophies have emerged as a promising and environmentally friendly alternative to reward athletes for their achievements.
Digital trophies are digital assets that are easily stored, transported, and shared on social media without the need for expensive and wasteful production processes, transportation, or storage.
Major sports events, such as the Baseball 5 World Cup, have embraced digital trophies, recognizing them as a sustainable alternative to physical medals. By eliminating the use of materials, transportation, and storage, digital assets drastically reduce the carbon footprint of sports events.
According to the 2030 Calculator, the carbon footprint of a gold medal is 708.18 kg CO2e, while the carbon footprint of a silver or bronze medal is 469.42 kg CO2e. In contrast, the carbon footprint of a digital medal is only 0.4g CO2e.
If we compare the carbon impact of 5,000 physical medals (gold, silver, and bronze), it would result in 16,811,700 kg of CO2e. In contrast, the carbon footprint of 5,000 digital medals would only be 200g CO2e.
As more and more federations embrace digital trophies, it is clear that the sports industry can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and promote a more environmentally responsible future.
By adopting sustainable and innovative solutions such as digital trophies, the industry can lead the way toward a better, greener future for generations to come.
